As I got to the top of Rt. 24 yesterday on my way home, traffic came to a stop. There were a couple of escape routes I could have taken. Brayton Ave., 195 East, but I chose to stay in the long line instead. It was a concious choice - sitting in traffic would give me the opportunity to just listen to music and think about life. Not only that, but I was curious as to what was causing the backup.
Progress was slow. My clutch leg started to feel like I was climbing Mt. Monadnock again, and my bladder was telling me that maybe choosing to sit in traffic was not the best decision. Of course, at that point I was already commited and had passed my points of escape.
Well, I made it home after about an hour of stop and go. One of those nifty trucks that carry new cars was stacked just a bit too high and didn’t make it under an overpass. Well, it did make it I guess, it just left the tops of three new cars behind. This of course was pretty much cleaned up by the time I got to the scene. Saw it on the news later though.
So in the end, I found out what caused the backup. Though I’m not too sure how far I got with that whole “thinking about life” thing.
Me thinks it’s time to add another blanket to my bed, as I’ve woken up freezing the past two mornings. The days are shorter now too - it’s dark when I get up in the morning. Signs that yet another summer is over.
As much as I dislike cold weather, it’s nice to see the seasons change and to put another year in the history books. I’m sure I would look forward to winter much more if I had a fireplace to sit down next to with a good book.
