So here’s the deal. As some of you know, it bothers me when people do not speak correctly. I tend to correct people, though sometimes only under my breath.
On Friday while I was at work a few of us were talking about Ipods and the headphones that come with them, and how they’re not the most comfortable things to wear. The headphones I bought to replace the stock ones were sitting on my desk, and my manager asked where I had gotten them.
So I said, “I got these ones at Walmart.”
Two people immediately corrected me, telling me that these ones is grammatically incorrect, and that I should just say these without the ones.
As I stated above, incorrect grammar bothers me. Have I really been incorrect my whole life by saying these ones? Oh, the shame!!! Not willing to believe that I have been wrong these many years, I did some research on the web, trying to find out if indeed it IS improper to say these ones. The thing is, nothing I found gave me a conclusive answer. Some people said it’s correct - it’s just not used very often. Other people said it’s incorrect. Not very conclusive.
In an effort to put this debate to rest once and for all, I ask for your help in determining the answer! I’m not looking for “well it soudns good to me!!1!” or “your an idiot eveyrone knows its wrong.” That’s what’s already out there. I’m looking for the truth based on actual grammar rules!
Let me know!
Update: So I’m still not sure what the correct answer should be, but I tend to think along the same lines as Eric. If “this one” is correct, then “these ones” must also be correct. I don’t care how it sounds to you. Ears have been known to lie.
