… Winter Storm Warning extended until 10 am EST this morning…
A Winter Storm Warning has been extended until 10 am this
morning for all of eastern Massachusetts and all of Rhode
Island. Snowfall amounts will exceed one foot in several
locations of extreme southeastern Massachusetts. The
warning area includes Worcester… Boston… Providence as
well as Cape Cod and the islands.
Bands of snow continued to shift eastward across the warning
area early this morning. Thus far snowfall amounts have generally
ranged from 8 to 15 inches… with the highest amounts approaching
Plymouth and the Cape Cod canal.
The steadiest snow will continue through the morning rush hour…
then taper off to scattered snow showers and flurries by
early afternoon.
Total accumulations should range from 8 to 16 inches across the
warning area by early afternoon. The least amounts will be found
across Worcester County with higher totals east to Boston and
Plymouth and south to Providence… Fall River and New Bedford.
The exception will be across the Cape Cod canal to Hyannis… where
lingering ocean effect wrap around snows will push storm totals
near 20 inches.
Strong northeast to east winds along the coast have resulted in wind
advisories for east coastal Massachusetts and a High Wind Warning for
Cape Cod and Nantucket. Locations across Cape Cod will see near
blizzard conditions at times this morning as the combination
of falling and blowing snow reduces the visibility to below 1/2 mile.
Power outages have occurred on Cape Cod and the islands with
numerous reports of wires and trees down. Wind speeds have
peaked to 59 mph at Nantucket Island… 55 mph at Marstons Mills
and 54 mph at Provincetown.
Travel is not recommended this morning in the warning area.
